Gymwear Junkies: Jai

Gymwear Junkies is my monthly feature of guys who have a love of gymwear, spandex, compression gear, etc. Our featured junkie this month loves gymwear so much that he even launched his own company. Read on to learn more about Jai from Titan Body Armor.

Describe your gymwear aesthetic

Since the gym is one of the few places during the day that I actually look at myself in the mirror, its always been important to me to not only feel comfortable, but to look good as well. My gym attire has to perform, while also allowing me to feel good. Because making progress is also a visual thing.

What are some of your favorite things to wear to the gym?

I used to wear a lot of compression shirts as they are incredibly comfortable. The funny thing is, that in the last two years, as I've increased muscle mass, I tend to wear a bit looser shirts. I especially love wearing my sleeveless hoodies. I've been working on some for my collection and hope to have them released sometime next year. For leg day I still wear workout tights even if they still get me lots of crazy looks. I still don't understand the concept of people feeling uncomfortable with a man in tights at the gym. If there is a place to wear them, the gym IS THE PLACE.

Your dedication to the gym shows. Do you feel what you wear contributes to your success at the gym?

Absolutely! When you threw on those pair of tights and cut-out t-shirt you experience something the experts call "enclothed cognition," which refers to a sort of mental shift you experience when you wear certain clothes. So, if you wear an article of clothing that makes you feel good, or possibly turns you on, you might, in turn, feel more happy yourself. One study in the Journal of Experimental Social Psychology suggests that clothing influences behavior and attitudes because it carries a symbolic meaning. So, what you wear is actually subconsciously changing how you act. And the better you look and feel at the gym, I fell in turn helps you have a more successful workout.

What do you think is a “must have” clothing item for every man at the gym?

A Jock hands down! You never have to worry about pulling it down or the back cracking your ass. I've been wearing them to the gym since 2006 when C-IN2 released their "fashion Jocks" as they were called then.

When did you decide to start your own line of gym wear and jocks?

Growing up in the 90's, I never felt comfortable with clothes. It was always a struggle to find something to wear. I always wanted pants and shirts to be "slim fitted/muscle fit". At the time those terms didn't exist. I also found underwear to be boring and hated cotton. Unfortunately, I was a collage student and without the funds or lack of resources and knowledge, the opportunity to launch something then was not a reality. Now things are easier but the money portion of a line is always the hardest. and the competition has increased.

One of the most frequently asked questions about leggings and tight shorts is “what do you wear underneath?” What’s your answer?

A Thong. Why guys wear compression boxers underneath them is beyond my comprehension as they squish your jewels and add another layer to your outfit. I'm working on a bugle thong line for 2019. With a very thin and incredibly stretchy material. Perfect for workouts.

Anything else you would like to share with our readers about gymwear?

One should always feel incredibly comfortable and look good because at the end of the day you need to feel on point when you look at yourself in the mirror. And there are too many of them at the gym! And remember enclothed cognition.
