You Get What You Pay For

One frequent question I receive is how much underwear I buy and how much I spend on it in a given month. To be honest, it varies a lot. I love my underwear, but I also love a good deal (check out my recent post about ways to save). I love that you can find underwear of all styles for every budget. But are they all created equal? In my experience, the answer is "no". All underwear is not created equal and you tend to get what you pay for. Today, I want to share with you the pros and cons based on my experiences.

On the cheap end of the scale are sites like Amazon and Wish. The best thing about these types of sites are the prices! If you're in the mood for cute undies, but on a budget, these sites might be good for you. One of my favorite briefs (and one of my first blog posts) were cheap briefs. I loved the style of these and the color. One year later though, I find myself rarely wearing them as the color has faded, the waistband isn't as tight (perhaps that's from too many cookies?), and overall they just have a very worn look to them. Keep in mind that with my extensive collection, I don't always wear the same things week after week. So for them to already look so sad, is not a good sign. If you're someone who tends to wear the same undies week after week, these likely would be looking sad within a couple of months. If you like switching things out regularly, these might last a bit longer.

The other issue you'll often encounter are knock-offs. There are some really good fakes out there that may look as if you spent 3 times what you spent, but they likely won't fit as well as the real deal and likely won't last as long. I learned that the hard way buy purchasing what I thought was a real PUMP brief, only to find I couldn't even get it over my thighs because it was way too small. Turns out, it was not the real deal. If it seems to good to be true, it probably is. Oh and there's also the ethical issue of those who have stolen the work of other designers just to make a knock-off. If we all buy cheap knock-offs, there won't be any designers left in business to bring us new and fantastic ideas.

On the other end of the spectrum, there are a ton of designer brands whose prices generally range from $20-$40 (luxury brands will go even higher). Some may object to those prices, but I have found the more I pay, the better fit and feel I receive. The fabrics tend to be of higher quality and the construction tends to be superior as well. These are usually undies that will last you many years. I never used to like to pay much for my underwear, but once I started branching out, I found a far superior product in all aspects. I soon learned that if I want undies that fit like a glove, I have to be willing to spend. Today I find myself with a mix of cheap and expensive undies, and I think that is a good balance. Over time I have learned to treat myself, especially because underwear is the thing that is closest to your most delicate body parts all day...treat yourself to something comfortable!

There is also a comfortable middle range...undies that range in price between $10 and $20. Sites like Mensuas and Audace tend to have a lot of options in this range. As you might guess by what you have already read, these undies tend to be middle-range, solid performers. They are of elevated quality compared to the really cheap brands, but still slightly lesser quality than their designer cousins. I find the fit and fabric of the more expensive brands tends to be better, however brands in this range are a really great compromise of price, style, and comfort.

In the end, I am glad that there are options in all price ranges for all guys. This allows people to branch out and try a variety of options. In the end, spend what you are comfortable spending, but don't be afraid to treat yourself to some nicer undies from time to time...remember, you (and your body) are worth it. Happy Shopping!
