1988 Sportster 1200 with some crankcase noise. Checked the lifters and the primary drive sprockets.Any ideas?
I was told that possibly the rockers were froze and scraping causing the noise, doesn't seem to be the problem. I pulled the cover off of the primary drive chain to check for any play in the sprockets or chain...again nothing. It doesn't sound like it is anything serious at this point, but I really would like to get this resolved. The noise seems to be located around the front cylinder, however, being a rigid mount, it is hard to pinpoint exactly. Has anyone else encountered this type of problem? Or have any ideas of what it could be???
I would look at the rocker balls and the rocker arms again, especially if the noise has a clicking component. The rocker arm balls may be scored and causing noise as they rotate against the bearing surface of the rocker arms. It's easy to overlook and hard to isolate the noise. It can also be a slight warping of the pushrods that causes them to scrape in their passages as they flex. This is especially true if the engine has ever overheated, stopped suddenly by a bad shift, or run low on oil. Just some educated guesses. Hope you find the problem before it finds you in the middle of nowhere without a ride.
